I work with indie and signed artists to turn rough demos into warm, character-rich records. We focus on the arrangement, the performance, and finding inspiring sounds that bring colour.

As a multi-instrumentalist, I’ll back you up. We can build a full, organic band sound together, make layers in the computer or cut the whole song live. We’ll let the song lead us to where it wants to go.

The Recording Process

Preproduction - from bedroom-pop to alternative indie, everything starts with the vision

We’ll start by sitting down together to explore your initial idea, whether its a rough voice memo, a fully fleshed out demo, or you playing it live right there in the room.

I want to hear your vision, your influences, things you want to try and what makes you excited about them. This first step helps us explore the concept and emotional landscape of the track, and it will shape our approach moving forward.

Tracking - every song has a spine; we’ll produce the music around yours

This stage is heavily creative, experimental and fun. We’ll make a mess and try ideas out, chase inspiring performances with unique tones - or program a journey within the box.

We’ll record drums, vocals, acoustic guitars, pianos, anything you need in the studio room. Get the core elements and see where we can push the boundaries, always letting the song guide the way, keeping an ear on the initial ideas to ensure we’re expanding on & enhancing what was originally there.

Mixing - post-production and creative tone-shaping for radio-ready results

Once the pieces are in place we’ll listen back with critical and honest thoughts - you won’t offend me, I’m here to help deliver your song in the most exciting way possible and I will push you to achieve that and expect you to do the same back to me.

Using production and mixing techniques we can thicken things, create excitement and change the song’s pace, and build a distinct sonic world for the piece.

While the biggest impact comes from changes in the writing and performance, these finishing sonic touches have a powerful effect when we use them right.

I’ve lived both sides of the glass…

I’ve spent over twenty years touring the UK and Europe, playing festivals, and recording in all kinds of studios, working with artists from Exeter, Plymouth, Torquay and further across the South West, stretching to Bristol, Cardiff and beyond.

I know exactly what it feels like to stand alone in a live room, feel the pressure of bandmates and engineers, and have to deliver a performance. I also know how hard it is to capture the raw energy of a live show, or to build upon a demo without losing that original spark.

I’ve collaborated in many spaces with many people - some big names, some small - and I’ve had both good and bad experiences in the studio. It’s all taught me how it should (and shouldn't) be done.

As a producer, I've worked with over a hundred different artists, helping them build records that have ended up on tv, sync ads, and national radio like BBC Radio 1, 2, and 6.

I’m here to back you up, play what the track needs, and challenge you to be your best, all while making sure the process actually feels good.

The Space

Most of my productions are recorded and mixed at Lantern Rooms, the studio I co-set up in Exeter, Devon. It’s a relaxed attic studio, made to hide away from the world. The kind of studio I’d always wanted to record in as a musician; a warm creative space that is a far cry from some of the more clinical studios out there.

Of course, sometimes you need a bigger space to make some noise in and I am well connected with recording studio options we can use if the project suits it. Alternatively, if you have somewhere specific in mind, want to work remotely or want to discuss options and feel out what works for the project, get in touch for a chat.

Guideline Rates

Sessions with me at Lantern Rooms are £250 per 8-hour day, with reduced rates for block bookings.

I keep my rates as accessible as possible because I genuinely want to support independent musicians and make great records viable.

If you're looking for ad-hoc mixing, remote tracking, or dedicated pre-production, get in touch and we can tailor a quote specifically for what you need.

Polishing & Releasing

Over the years I’ve built a trusted circle of creative collaborators. If your track needs a specific instrument we can't play ourselves, or you need some great photos I have a network we can dip into.

When it’s time for mastering I have some great people who can help.

From the first day sharing ideas to uploading the tracks to release or pressing vinyl you won't have to figure it out alone.

FAQs

Absolutely! This is more common than you might think & one of the rawest ways to get an idea across. This shows us the initial idea and we can explore from there.
Note - if you’re using a phone to record a rehearsal make sure you do a test recording first so that you can hear everything clearly.
That’s totally fine & very normal. (If you’re like me there’s probably a thousand ideas you like the sound of). This is what pre-production is for.
Bring some reference tracks, artists you love, or even just concepts and emotions you want to capture. My job is to help translate those ideas into actual tones, arrangements, and instruments.
That is my specialty. I can step in to play drums, bass, keys, synth, guitars & BVs directly alongside you. We don't need to hire session musicians or program MIDI instruments (unless it fits the sound…)
We’ll build an organic, real band sound together in the room.
There’s a home advantage to Lantern Rooms - it’s where I have most of my instruments and gear set up ready to go, so tracking here is where we get the most fluid and speedy workflow.
Sometimes a different space or studio will suit a project better - I am always happy to work in new studios & help to find the right space for the project.

Of course! working through the internet is no barrier.
It depends on the scope and how we choose to build it. A single typically takes between two and four days across pre-production, tracking, and mixing. An EP or album will naturally take longer so every track gets the room and detail it deserves.
Making records is always a balance between scope, time, and budget - you’re in the driver’s seat. We’ll talk through your vision, budget, and timeline up front so that there’s a clear plan that fits you, with zero surprises along the way.
We can do either. If your magic comes from playing live in a room together, we’ll set up to capture that energy. If a track needs a more layered, step-by-step production approach, we can build it instrument by instrument. We'll pick whichever approach serves the song best.
This is where a great pre-production session will inform the processes that we follow.
Definitely not. As always - the vision for the song will lead us. If the song needs it then we will use one & can put tempo changes in or leave it static. If the song needs to be free then the click will be gone and we will make a great guide track to build from (this could be anything, not always drums!)
Production and mixing are my core focus. I always hand over ‘fully baked’ mixes that are ready to go, however once a mix is approved, I usually recommend sending it to a dedicated mastering engineer to give it a final objective set of ears. It can give you an extra 5-10% of polish.
I work with a trusted network of brilliant mastering engineers for different budgets and styles, and I’ll handle the delivery process to make sure it’s seamless.
